The beans of Kupi Luwak are harvested after being ingested (yes - ingested, digested, and expelled) by civet cats, and only about 260 kilos (about 573 pounds) of the coffee is produced each year.

"The cats select the best beans to chew. It's rather like a natural filtering process," said Carie Barkhuzen, a spokeswoman for the upmarket store in London's upmarket Sloane Square.

The coffee, which went on sale Thursday, is available at $100 for a shot at the Peter Jones Espresso Bar, or shoppers can buy 100g (3.5-ounce) packs of the coffee beans to take away for the same price.

Get it while it's hot [pun intended].

Luther Vandross' Mother Has Passed Away

I heard this morning on the Tom Joyner Morning Show that Evangelist Mary Ida Vandross, mother of the late Grammy Award winning singer Luther Vandross, has passed away.

Mrs. Vandross was the last surviving member of the Vandross family. The evangelist spent her latter years as a strong advocate and spokesperson for 'Diabetes Aware' campaign, due to the devastation the disease had caused in her family. In a 2006 article published in Jet magazine, she says, "I want people to listen and actually hear what I am saying. You realize what I am going through. I have lost three children and one grandchild to diabetes. I have also lost my husband and mother to diabetes-related illnesses. (Daughter Ann died of complications from asthma). I am a lonely person. I had four loving children, now I have no children. You don't know how empty my life is sometimes. No one knows what it feels like. I don't want anyone to hurt like I am hurting and be lonely like I am lonely. Go and be checked for diabetes. Do it for your loved ones, do it for yourself."

Finally, Mrs. Vandross can dance with her family again.

Polygamy Teens Forced to Have Sex in the Temple

I'm really tired of talking about this foolishness. This whole thing is a tangled nest that will unravel for years to come. I think this will be my last post about it.

Anyway, the business at the polygamy compound in ElDorado, Texas gets more uncomfortable. The details of the lifestyle of the camp are being made public and it's not a pretty picture:

Teenage girls were required to have sex in the temple immediately after they were married. There's a bed in the temple (yes, one little nasty bed for all those people) where males over 17 are to have sex with girls under 17. Agents report that the bed had disturbed linens and what appeared to be a female hair (I guess the hair was long enough to assume it belonged to a girl). They've found marriage records for girls as young as 12 and 13 to older men. Births among teens. A 16-year old with 4 children. About a dozen children with chicken pox. Kids don't really know who their parents are - claiming multiple mothers or don't know at all. And on top of all that, authorities are still not sure whether they have the girl who made the original call in protective custody.

Now, stepping outside of the obvious tragedy of this situation and my personal beliefs, let me pose a question. Would we be outraged if this scene was taking place in the jungles of South America or the mountains of New Guinea or in the African bush? We all know that polygamy is tradition in other cultures and based on some of the episodes that I've seen on the Discovery Channel and the Travel Channel, not all of the girls are overjoyed about their lifestyle either. Many are forced into marriage with men they have never met. They become young brides and often the victims of abuse and rape. I'm sure if they had access to cell phones and rescue hotlines, they would be trying to get out of there, just like the 16-year old who blew the whistle on the Texas sect. In indigenous cultures, boys become men at puberty and girls become women (and eligible for marriage and childbearing) at puberty. Why are we so comfortable with this way of life in other cultures (even sitting down with family members to watch repeatedly), but outraged by it in Texas? Is it because we consider indigenous cultures uncivilized? Don't throw stones at me, it's just something to think about as we freely toss our morality around. I'm not saying that it's right, just making an observation on our sense of justice.

Black Men Beware!!! Man Threatens Black Celebrities...

...who like White women!

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio man has been indicted on charges that he threatened to blow up the U.S. Supreme Court and attack black men, including a justice on the court, according to an indictment filed Wednesday.

David Tuason, 46, targeted black men known to affiliate with white women, well-known white women who had relationships with black men, and children of mixed-race parents, federal authorities said.

Over the span of 20 years, Tuason has sent emails and letters threatening Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, office personnel at Jordache Enterprises, the Kent State Women's Basketball Team, several Ohio high schools, and the Severance Hall home of the Cleveland Orchestra among others. Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg confirmed that a threat was made against Clarence Thomas but refused further comment.

The threats he's accused of are mostly alike, promising physical violence against black men associated with white women. Tuason is in the custody of U.S. Marshals and has been indicted. "It's been a very long, enduring case," FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said. "Basically it's a case we never gave up on." "As far as we know, it's a one-man operation."

Somebody better sound the alarm and warn most of the brothas in the NBA, NFL, & MLB that anybody who has jungle fever, or is a by-product of said union, is a potential target. Hurry up and call Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Barry Bonds, Taye Diggs, Seal, Ice-T, Michael Jackson (wait, should he count twice since he is a white woman?), Thomas Jefferson's offspring, Heidi Klum, Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, Barak Obama, Bill Clinton (my bad, he's not black anymore...LOLOL!!!), and O.J. - nevermind, you can have him.

Bill & Hillary Clinton Sharply Disagree on Free Trade

Interesting. So, the Clintons have agreed to disagree over the Colombia free trade agreement. Hillary staunchly opposes saying, "the Colombia free trade deal, in my view, is not appropriate because of the history of suppression and targeted killings of labor organizers in Colombia. There is an argument that there has been some improvement and change by the Colombian government but it is not enough for me."

On the other hand, Bill has been a supporter since 2000, raking in $800,000 from Gold Service International, a development group based in Bogota, Colombia, that supports the Colombia free trade deal. The payment was for appearances in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil in 2005. (I wonder if Hillary opposed Bill's profits from the deal. Will she reject & denounce his interest bearing accounts?)

Yes, it's perfectly normal for couples to disagree. What's interesting is the position that Hillary presented early on in her campaign, that a vote for her was a vote for the Clinton presidency of old. Many are supporting her because they remember Bill's legacy...but, is it just that? Bill's legacy, not Bill & Hillary's? With their seemingly numerous, sharp disagreements on policy matters, it makes you wonder how much different a Hillary White House would be from Bill's White House (I certainly don't think you'll find interns under Oval Office desks...lol!)

Since she is semi-campaigning on her husband's merits, but she so strongly opposes some of his accomplishments, it kinda makes me wonder if Mrs. Hyde will show up if she's the one who will get the master key to the West Wing.

Will the real Hillary Clinton please stand up?

Louisiana Man Cuts Grass in a Skirt...Doctor's Orders!

Ordinances against exposure of genitalia or underwear primarily due to the sagging pants style have popped up all over Louisiana. In the small town of Clinton, near Baton Rouge, a man named Jay Herrod has a very personal problem with the enforcement of the ordinance (story).

Mr. Herrod has a lawn cutting service and due to a medical condition (heat rash) he has doctor's orders to wear a skirt at all times during the summer. This means that Jay sports his mini while on the lawnmower as well as running errands around town. The skirt is not that big a deal, but when the wind blows or when Jay is sitting on his mower, his underwear is exposed which is in direct violation of the city's ordinance.

Herrod's customers don't mind his uniform. "He cuts the yard in a hurry, does a good job. I don't have any problems. That's what I was interested in. Don't pay attention to what he wears," says Carline Kimbro, "I don't really get fired up about it. And I don't see any reason for anyone else to. If you don't like it, don't look."

From time to time, Herrod's skirt does fly up, but Herrod says he dresses this way for a reason, and he should be the exception to that ordinance. "One doctor told me the only thing for me to do was wear a skirt....Allows that area to breathe and wearing skirt on mower allows sweat to evaporate."

2 Year Old Dies After Being Beaten With Video Game Controller

Two-year old Darisabel Baez died after being beaten by her mother's boyfriend. 26-year old Harve L. Johnson admitted to using a video game controller to beat the toddler, but did not say why. He was already in jail on counts including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and now the charge of homicide has been added.

The girl's 19-year old mother, Neida E. Baez, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child because she did not intervene or try to get help for the child.

Authorities say that due to the extent of the child's bruising, it is evident that this was not the first time she had been beaten. The coroner said that it was one of the worst cases of child abuse that he had ever seen.

Apparently, the mother heard the girl scream but didn't pay much attention until the boyfriend brought the girl to her limp and wet. He had attempted to revive her in the bathtub. (source)

Singer Toni Braxton Hospitalized

Fox 5 News in Las Vegas reports that Grammy Award winner Toni Braxton was admitted to St. Rose Dominican Hospital sometime after her show Monday night at the Flamingo. Hospital officials say that she is in good condition after being admitted overnight with chest pains.

It is known that Braxton suffers from a form of heart disease called pericarditis which is an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart. At a fit 110 pounds, the 40 year old Braxton is that last person you would imagine with heart disease which is exactly why she is the spokeswoman for Campbell Soup Co.'s GoRedWithCampbells.com.

According to an article published just this past January in Newsweek.com, last year Braxton found out that she also had high blood pressure: 160/105 without medication. Now she takes a beta-blocker to lower it and walks on a treadmill at least 20 minutes a day. She also tries to resist her salty favorite foods, like burgers with bacon. Instead she opts for "vinegary salads," asparagus and low-sodium chicken and jambalaya soups.

"You can be in your 30s, less than 115 pounds, exercise—and have heart disease." Women can take steps to help prevent coronary disease, including not smoking, exercising at least 30 minutes a day, losing weight if necessary and eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.

We have to take care of our bodies. We only get one! Today is Tom Joyner's 'Take a Loved One to the Doctor' Day. Pledge to take someone (or yourself) to the doctor...it could save their life.

Villagers in India Worship Baby Born with 2 Faces

Lali has a rare condition called craniofacial duplication. She has two noses, two sets of lips and two sets of eyes. "She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," said the director at the hospital where the baby was born.
Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.

I have a confession to make. I have a serious girl-crush on Carrie Underwood and have for a while now. If I were a guy, she would be posted all over my bedroom wall. I am such a stan. I camp out on CMT or GMA sometimes, just to catch one of her videos or maybe a performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Not only is this girl super cute, but she can sang too!

But, don't let the cute face fool ya. My girl Carrie keeps it real. She just broke up with her boyfriend...via text message and never batted an eye.

fans that there were no tears and that she's doing just fine.

"I Was Raped" T-Shirt

I noticed this yesterday, but forgot to check and see what it was all about. According to a blog on the New York Times.com site:

In 2004, Jennifer Baumgardner distributed T-shirts with a bold message across their fronts in blocky blue text: “I Had an Abortion.” More recently, the Williamsburg-based writer and activist decided to apply her T-shirt approach to
consciousness-raising to the subject of rape.

After a few different versions were shelved, she turned to graphic designer friend Vinnie Angel. His concept: a safe with its door wide open, revealing inside a small note card that reads, in handwriting, “I was raped.”

What was she going for? A shirt that would let rape victims “own the experience,” she says, and would help chip away the cone of silence that surrounds a crime with humiliation at its core.

A shirt that would start conversations.

I think her next t-shirt should say " I Was Robbed" and have a picture of a gas pump in the background.

What do you think about "owning" experiences like rape, molestation, abortion, etc? I definitely think it takes awareness to another level when you can put a face on it.

Shreveport Stripper Catches on Fire During Performance

No, it wasn't due to friction on the pole.

The Shreveport Times reports that a 31 year old stripper's routine went up in flames. Seriously. She had a spark about her that night. Her moves were smokin' hot. She set the place on fire. Okay, all jokes aside...

On Friday, April 4, the exotic entertainment engineer's dance routine was too hot to handle (okay I'm sorry I couldn't resist one more). While performing her dance routine which included flame blowing, the dancer's face and neck ignited and she suffered second degree burns. Paramedics were called to the club around 4:30am where the woman was taken to the hospital, treated, and released. She's been performing the routine for a while, but this is the first accident.

The city’s fire and life safety code forbids this type of pyrotechnics inside a business without a permit. The club did not have a permit, according to Brian Crawford, assistant to the fire chief. Fire investigators told club management to stop any further flammable demonstrations. Club managers said they would comply.

No more flammable demonstrations? [ insert crude joke here ]

UPDATE: 16 Year Old Called in Tip at Polygamy Ranch

I'm sure more details about this drama will continue to unfold over the coming days. CNN.com reports that Texas officials raided the polygamist camp on a "tip" that came in from a 16 year old girl who called a family violence hotline on March 29th to report abuse, rape, and that girls as young as 13 were being forced to enter "spiritual marriages," have sex and bear children. After the first call, she made a second call to say that she was "happy and fine" and to take it all back.

(Question: How did she get the number to a hotline if she was in the camp with no access to the outside world? I seriously doubt if they had tv or radio and I know the telephone book wasn't sitting around. And who is the maverick in the sect with a cell phone that she got access to? ...just a few questions. She reported on the call that she was the man's 7th wife and that she was pregnant (again?) and that her parents were about to bring her 15-year old sister to the compound. She said church members also told her if she left the ranch "outsiders will hurt her, force her to cut her hair, to wear makeup and [different] clothes and to have sex with lots of men."

(If she's already being beat up and raped by her "spiritual husband" then bringing up life on the "outside" doesn't seem like much of a threat.)

The affidavit said while child welfare workers and law enforcement officers were searching the ranch, they saw a number of apparently pregnant teen girls who appeared to be minors and others who already had children. A total of 416 children have been removed.

Over 400 Children Taken in Raid on Polygamy Compound in Texas

Honestly, I've really been trying to ignore this story since it started last week. I don't know why, it just seems like another one of those David Koresh/Branch Davidian cult kinda scenes and I didn't feel like reading about it. Ironically, it takes place in Texas (the other ATF/FBI raid was in Waco).

Anyway, if you've been wondering what this is all about but haven't had the energy to really pay attention, here's the gist:

A polygamist group in ElDorado, Texas set up camp on a 1700 acre compound. Included in the family were over 400 children and over 130 women (133 left voluntarily which means that more stayed behind?). There were also an unspecified number of men who were not allowed to leave the compound. I guess they are presumably guilty of something and will be held pending further investigations. This is believed to be the biggest operation of it's kind in Texas. 401 children have been found and authorities believe that there are more (!!!). They are now burdened with trying to find foster care for the 401 kids that are currently in state's custody.

The compound was raided after one of the girls reported to authorities that sexual and physical abuse was taking place. It is also reported that one of the girls (possibly the whistle blower) was an underage bride who was married to a 50 year old man and gave birth at age 15.

Okay, I just have a few questions about polygamy. It's every man's dream to be with more that one woman with no strings attached right? But are 400 kids included in that dream? And why in 2008 in the middle of scorching hot West Texas are they dressed like Little House on the Prairie?! Is modesty really an issue when you get to pick which wife to sleep with every night and 15 year olds are married to 50 year old men? I mean really. Doesn't this just shoot holes in the theory that scantily clad women encourage promiscuity? To me, it looks like in polygamy world the rule is mo' fabric, mo' fun....right?

I'm just sayin. Maybe I need to change my game up and start wearing more clothes. I'm logging off right now to go put on a slip, a long nightgown and two housecoats and put my hair up in a bun. I bet I'll be married by the end of the summer. ...watch

Is Condoleezza Rice Eyeing the VP Spot Next to McCain?

If it hadn't been for a tip from a faithful CAARL stan, I would have allowed this to completely slip by me. According to CNN.com, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice may be positioning herself to snatch the Republican Vice Presidential nomination, but McCain claims to not see the signals.

John McCain said Sunday night he hasn't personally seen signals Condoleezza Rice is interested in running as vice president, following a report the Secretary of State is angling for the No. 2 spot on the Republican Presidential ticket.

"I missed those signals," McCain told reporters on his campaign plane. "I think she’s a great American, I think there’s very little that I can say that isn’t anything but the utmost praise for a great American citizen, who served as a role model to so many millions of people in this country and around the world."

Role model to whom? And what kind of signal is he looking for? A smoke signal? Does she need to send up flares? Does he want her to shoot one of her friends (and then make them apologize for being in the line of fire) so that she can prove she's Cheney-like?

Interesting paradox. For a woman who has built her career on her merits and not on her double minority status, it seems that when it comes down to playing hard ball for the second highest position in the nation, even Condi is willing to win at whatever the cost...even if it means being a token. The one thing that she fought her whole life not to be rewarded for may just turn out to be the key to her greatest achievement. I pose the question: Would Condoleezza Rice be an attractive candidate if there were no Barak Obama or no Hillary Clinton? Now that the Republicans need someone on their ticket to offset Barak's appeal to minorities and/or Hillary's appeal to women, is it time for Condi to tear off her business suit to reveal the red tights, white cape and the VP on her chest? Or maybe she should shock the world by stepping across her lifelong party line to be Barak or Hillary's VP instead of the Republicans' affirmative action hire. Now that would be something revolutionary....or something very scary.

Even when she's laughing it looks like her eyes are trying to steal your soul.

Naomi Campbell Arrested...again!

Miss SoBe Life Water herself... the baddest chick to ever hit the catwalk...the hottest woman to ever do the Thriller dance... the one who brandishes a cell phone like its a registered weapon...Naomi Campbell has once again reportedly been arrested.

I guess people still haven't figured it out yet. Naomi is just not somebody who appreciates bad news...ever! Campbell's publicist in Los Angeles, Jeff Raymond, wrote in an e-mail that Campbell was flying to Los Angeles for a Thursday memorial service. He said she checked two bags in at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 with plenty of time to spare and was told they would make the flight. He said once on the plane, however, Campbell was told one of her bags was missing.

Raymond said British Airways decided to resolve the situation by insisting Campbell leave the flight, and then called police to forcibly eject her from the airplane. After (or possibly during) the forcible removal, she allegedly spit at a police officer. I say she should plead not guilty. Maybe she had a mouthful of SoBe Life Water and a little accidentally squirted out towards the officer. Come on, it's happened to us all at some point.

(Question: why is Naomi Campbell still taking commercial flights? Shouldn't she be chartering private jets by now? just asking.)

Since the previous 2 day anger management didn't really work for Naomi I have the perfect solution to properly deal with this penchant she has for spontaneous thuggery. Send her off on a little vacation to the Cebu, Philippines to the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center where she and the 1,500 plus CPDRC inmates have a whole lot in common. She could get some much needed rest, continue to perfect her Thriller dance, stomp the yard and just be fabulous for no reason at all. We already know she looks good in orange. Check it out:

Teen Tries to Flush Newborn Down Toilet at School

At first glance, I thought this was an update to the story that hit the news a few days ago about the 14 year old who gave birth to a stillborn baby on a Continental flight and put the fetus in the wastebasket. To my horror, I realized that this is ANOTHER 14 year old in Texas who has had a baby, except this time she delivered the baby alive in the Jr. High school restroom, heard him cry and then tried to flush him down the toilet, which killed him.

The girl was taken to a hospital. People who knew her at school said she wore baggy clothing, and nobody suspected she was pregnant, The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

School officials learned of her pregnancy when another student who was in the restroom while the eighth-grader was in labor went to ask the school nurse for help, said Kathy Clausen, spokeswoman for Baytown's Goose Creek school district.

Authorities have not announced what charges the girl will face, if any. She is too young to be considered for the death penalty.

According to People.com, the super stealth nuptials took place Friday with a few close friends and family. There were a bunch of flowers, a penthouse party, etc., etc., etc.

I'm leaving right now to go wait at the gas station for them to change the price of premium to $1.00/gal. Surely this wedding is a sign from heaven. *lifts hands and weeps*

Jay-Z and Beyonce Get Marriage License

And we care because...???

I normally don't blog about everyday celebrity chatter, but when I saw this posted on CNN.com as a top news story I couldn't resist. Jay-Z and Beyonce have been an underground couple since 2002 and People.com has reported that on April 1 they applied for a marriage license in Scarsdale, New York.

This wouldn't be the first rumored nuptials for the couple, so who knows if it's true or not. What's hilarious to me is that people are sitting around debating whether or not their marriage would work. I would really jump on board with caring about this if somebody could prove that the union of Jay-Z and Beyonce would:

1. cause the price of gas to go down

2. reverse the recession

3. bring the housing market back up

4. stop the war in Iraq

5. slow down global warming

6. take Beyonce off the scene long enough for Kelly Rowland to sell a few more CDs

Bonnie & Clyde may finally become Mr. & Mrs. Hov. Congrats. After work I'll swing over to Target to check their gift registry.

Senator's Husband Admits Paying for Sex

Can somebody call T.D. Jakes and set up a church service at FedEx field in Maryland? Invite all the congressmen, governors, mayors, senators, and cabinet members, in addition to pastors, evangelists, ministers, deacons, and choir directors for the express purpose of having a mass altar call. Can everybody just show up on the same day, admit to their sexual escapades, apologize to their spouses, repent to the Lord, and just move on?

So another political leader gets bitten by sex for hire, but this time it's the elected official's husband who was the customer. Sen. Debbie Stabenow's husband told authorities that he paid $150 for a prostitute. After getting caught up in a stake out at the Residence Inn in Troy, MI, Thomas Athans admitted to the police officer who stopped him "that he had just met a female at the Residence Inn, where he paid $150 for sex."

The doors of the church are open. Is there one?

UPDATE: Experts Have Doubts About 3rd Graders Plot to Attack Teacher

The AP reports that experts are skeptical about the 3rd graders determination to really follow through with the plot to harm their teacher. Although it was clear that they brought a glass paperweight in order to knock the teacher out, in addition to a steak knife, handcuffs, and duct tape, experts said children that age are certainly imaginative and capable of creating elaborate games. But Dr. Louis Kraus, a child psychiatry expert at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, said he doubts they would have actually attacked.

"The reality is it is highly unlikely they would have been successful at this," Kraus said. "Even if it had begun, it's unclear whether they actually would have followed through with it."

Okay. If a 12 year old is capable of dancing at a strip club and making good tips, then I believe these 3rd graders fully planned to go through with this - Ocean's Eleven style.

3rd Graders Plot to Attack Teacher

THE PLOT: A group of 3rd graders (8 and 9 year olds) at Center Elementary School in Waycross, Georgia brought a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigned children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.

THE MOTIVE: They were mad at the teacher because she scolded one of them for standing on a chair.

THE TARGET: A veteran teacher who teaches students with learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD, etc).

THE PUNISHMENT: The students have been suspended, but the school system is trying to see how far they can go with the discipline since they are all under 13.

THE SAD PART: The principal seems to be in denial. "This is an isolated incident, an aberration. ... We have good kids," Center Principal Angie Coleman told the newspaper.

Yep, good kids who compiled duct tape, a steak knife, and handcuffs in a duffel bag and brought it to school. Unless they were bringing props for the school play "Extreme Home Makeover featuring Cops and Chefs", something is horribly wrong Principal Coleman. I hope this is an April Fools joke.

One of the greatest Jazz voices of our time was hospitalized on Monday with a collapsed lung (source). She is said to be in good spirits and expected to recover, but she will have to cancel at least one upcoming performance.

It is a life long dream of mine to attend one of her shows. She is absolutely incredible and I have been captivated by her voice since I saw her for the first time on the Cosby Show. At 71 she is still so elegant and the picture of style and grace. My mom knows how much I love to watch Nancy Wilson perform, so whenever she's on television, I always get a phone call letting me know that I need to turn on the TV! A good friend of mine, who had a band in North Carolina and is also an incredible singer, opened up for her several years ago....i am so jealous (love u Keryl!)
